Types of Circuit Boards Used in PCB
Printed Circuit Boards (PCB), as you are already aware, are used to provide mechanical support by electronically connecting different electronic components. It uses a wide array of conductive pathways or tracks engraved using copper on a diverse range of boards made up of non-conductive substances. Now, there are several different types of flex right circuit boards used as per requirement. From fiberglass to aluminum, there are several different types of circuit boards.
Choosing the type of circuit board depends on the printed circuit board design. In this blog, we explore different types of Circuit Boards to help you understand the difference.
#1. Aluminum Boards
In contrast with conventional boards which are made using fiberglass, aluminum boards are a far more environment-friendly and cheaper option. Aluminum boards are easy to recycle and offer better ways to conserve precious energy. Not just that, aluminum is deemed to be considerably more durable when compared to other materials commonly used in the making of circuit boards – thus reducing the risk of damage during shipping and installation. Furthermore, aluminum is considered to be one of the top fits for
flex circuit design due to its low cost, eco-friendliness, and durability.
#2 Rigid Boards
Rigid boards are another option to consider while preparing or choosing your printed circuit board design. Typically, as the name suggests, rigid boards are made using material that is rigid – which helps in preventing the board from twisting. For example, motherboards used in computers are made out of rigid boards. In the current technology-driven economy, rigid boards are the most popular form of PCBs as they are used in the making of all types of computers. It plays an integral role in facilitating communication between different parts of the computer through electricity allocation. The rigidity of these boards allows them to be arranged in any form of printed circuit board design – from single-layered to multi-layered boards.
#3 Single Layered Boards
As the name itself suggests, single-layered boards are made up of a material consists of a single layer. While one side of the board is made of metal, generally copper which is an excellent electrical conductor. That side of the single-layer board after being coated with copper is protected with a mask. Single layered boards are simplistic and their ease to design drives their cost down if they are manufactured in large quantities. Major applications for single-layered boards include cameras, calculators and printers etc.
#4 Double Layered Boards
In contrast with single-layered boards, double-layered boards are coated with a conductive material such as copper on both sides. By drilling holes into the board, the circuits on both sides of the board are connected to one another. This design allows to fit in more components within a smaller space and increased functionality – as well as reduced weight and increased speed. Double-layered boards are designed specifically for instruments such as amplifiers and dashboards in cars.
